How to use the area converter

The page converts as soon as you change anything, so there is no convert button to look for.

  1. Type the size you have into Value. Decimals such as 7.5 are accepted.
  2. Pick the unit that number is measured in under From. The list runs from square millimetres up to square miles and includes marla and kanal.
  3. Pick the unit you want under To. The large result updates, and a note beneath it gives the plain relationship, for example 1 acre = 0.4047 ha.
  4. Press Swap units to turn the conversion round without retyping the number.
  5. Read the In every unit list when you are not sure which unit a listing, survey or supplier will use. Your value appears in all twelve units together.

Marla and kanal for plots and property listings

Buyers of residential land in Pakistan and Indian Punjab meet marla and kanal constantly, while foreign listings and architects work in square feet or square metres. This tool uses the usual Punjab convention: 1 marla = 272.25 square feet (25.2929 m²) and 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 square feet (505.857 m²).

1 kanal5,445505.86605
2 kanal10,8901,011.711,210

Larger land is easier to compare in acres: 1 acre is 160 marla or 8 kanal. A plot advertised as 200 m² works out at 7.91 marla.

Treat the marla as a local custom, not a universal unit. Its size differs between regions, between old revenue records and modern housing schemes, and sometimes between two sellers in the same town. Always read the area printed on the title deed, registry paper or society file, and ask which marla it assumes before you compare prices per marla. If the figure on your paper differs from 272.25 square feet, convert through square feet yourself instead of trusting the marla row. Once you have the total price and the area, the mortgage calculator shows what financing it would cost.

Common conversions and the square trap

These figures come straight from the factors in the tool and are rounded for reading.

  • 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.86 m² = 0.4047 ha
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.4711 acres
  • 1 square mile = 640 acres = 2.59 km²
  • 100 m² = 1,076.39 ft², and 1 ft² = 0.0929 m²
  • 3 acres = 1.2141 ha; 12 ft² = 1.1148 m²

The classic mistake is converting an area with a length factor. One metre is 3.28084 feet, but one square metre is not 3.28 square feet: it is 3.28084 x 3.28084, which is 10.7639 square feet. A 25 m² room is therefore 269.10 ft², not 82. Whenever you see a squared unit, the factor is squared as well. If you only have a length and a width, convert each side with the length converter first or multiply them out on the scientific calculator.

This tool converts units only. It does not work out an area from dimensions, add allowances for wastage, or judge an irregular boundary. For flooring or paint, add a margin for cuts and overlap with the percentage calculator, and for liquids in a tank turn to the volume converter.

Worked examples from lawn to farm

A few realistic jobs show how the units fit together. A lawn measuring 12 m by 8 m is 96 m², which the tool turns into about 1,033 ft² when a turf supplier quotes in square feet. A farm of 12 acres comes to 4.856 hectares, a figure you can use directly against a hectare-based subsidy form or soil report. A 120 square yard plot, common in city listings, is 3.97 marla.

Results are shown to four decimal places for values between 1 and 1,000, and fewer above that, so very small differences between sources may be rounding rather than error. If a seller and a surveyor disagree by a few square feet, ask which measurement method each used before assuming a mistake. The converter treats every input as exact and does not know how carefully a boundary was measured.

For rental or sales listings abroad, the usual snag is a mix of gross and net areas. Whether a figure includes walls, balconies or shared space is a question for the agent, not something any unit conversion can settle.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How many square feet are in a marla?

On this converter one marla is 272.25 square feet, which equals 25.2929 square metres. That is the common Punjab figure, but the size of a marla varies by region and local custom, so confirm the area on your own title deed before relying on any conversion.

How many marla are in a kanal?

A kanal is 20 marla. With the 272.25 square foot marla used here, one kanal is 5,445 square feet or 505.857 square metres, and eight kanal make one acre. Regions that define the marla differently will give a different kanal, though the ratio of 20 stays the same.

How many hectares are in an acre?

One acre is 0.4047 hectares, or 4,046.86 square metres. Going the other way, one hectare is 2.4711 acres. A quick estimate is to multiply acres by 0.4 to get hectares, which is accurate to about one percent for everyday land sizes.

Why is a square metre not 3.28 square feet?

Because area scales with the square of length. A metre is 3.28084 feet, so a square metre, which is a metre on each side, covers 3.28084 times 3.28084 square feet, or 10.7639. Always square the length factor when you convert an area by hand.

Is my land size sent anywhere when I use the area converter?

No. The conversion is calculated by JavaScript in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged by the site. The page works the same way for a garden, a farm or a plot you are thinking of buying.
