Upper Case Converter

Convert any text to capital letters as you type. This free upper case converter changes every letter to uppercase, leaves numbers and punctuation alone, and works entirely in your browser, so private text is never uploaded.

How to use the upper case converter

Turning text into capitals needs no account and no convert button, because the result updates as you work.

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input box. Paste takes text from the clipboard and Clear empties the box.
  2. Read the result in the box labelled UPPERCASE TEXT. Digits, punctuation, spaces and line breaks are copied across unchanged, so lists and paragraphs keep their shape.
  3. Press Copy to copy the capitals, Download .txt to save them as a file, or Use as input to carry on editing the result.

For example, Hello world becomes HELLO WORLD and invoice no. 4821 paid becomes INVOICE NO. 4821 PAID. The conversion runs in your browser only. Contracts, internal notices and personal messages are not sent to a server, and the tool copes with a single word or thousands of lines.

How uppercase mapping works

The tool uses the Unicode uppercase mapping that every modern browser ships with, so it does more than swap a for A. Accented letters, Greek and Cyrillic are capitalised correctly, while characters without case are left exactly as they were.

café ñandúCAFÉ ÑANDÚAccents are kept
straßeSTRASSEOne letter becomes two

Because a few characters expand, the output can be longer than the input. If you are working to a character limit, look at the Characters figure under the Input box and compare it with the result. Turkish rules are not applied, so a plain i becomes I and not the dotted İ.

When capitals help and when they hurt

Capitals suit short strings: acronyms such as HTML, warning labels, legal notices, constants in code like MAX_RETRIES, and labels on buttons or signs. Block capitals are also required on some paper forms, shipping labels and visa applications.

For long passages the picture changes. Lowercase words have distinctive outlines that help the eye, and an all caps paragraph flattens them into rectangles, so most readers find it slower going. Some screen readers may also spell out capitalised words letter by letter, and in chat or email capitals are read as shouting. If a website heading should look uppercase, set the CSS property text-transform: uppercase and keep the real text in normal case. That way search engines and assistive technology still see ordinary words.

The converter only changes letters. To build a constant name from a phrase you also need underscores in place of spaces, which the find and replace tool can do after the case change.

Related case tools

If you change your mind, the lower case converter reverses the effect, and the sentence case converter turns a wall of capitals back into readable sentences. For headlines where small words such as of and the should stay small, use the title case converter.

Capital letters are not the same as styled letters. Bold, outlined or wide lettering that survives on social media is made from different Unicode symbols, not from capitals, and comes from the Unicode font tools on this site. Plain uppercase text, by contrast, pastes into any form, spreadsheet or code editor and behaves like the capitals you would type yourself.

Inside office programs the same job has its own shortcuts. Excel and Google Sheets use the UPPER function, for example =UPPER(A1), and Word offers Change Case on the Home tab. Typical jobs for this page are filling in block-capital forms, preparing labels and signage, writing SQL keywords or environment variable names, and fixing a heading that was typed in lowercase to match the rest of a document. A short test run on a few words is a good idea before you convert a whole page.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I make all letters capital?

Paste your text into the Input box and the capital version appears at once in the output box. Each lowercase letter is replaced by its capital, and numbers and punctuation stay unchanged. Press Copy to take the result and paste it wherever you need all caps text.

Why did my character count change after converting to uppercase?

A few letters expand when capitalised. The German sharp s becomes SS, and ligatures such as the fi character become two letters. The result can therefore be longer than the input. Compare the Characters figures if you are working to a limit.

Is all caps text hard to read?

Long passages in capitals are slower to read because every word becomes a similar rectangle, and many readers take capitals in messages as shouting. Short items such as headings, labels, acronyms and warnings are fine. Use capitals sparingly and keep body text in normal case.

How do I keep a website heading uppercase without retyping it?

Use the CSS property text-transform with the value uppercase on the heading. The page then displays capitals while the underlying text stays in normal case, which helps search engines and screen readers. This converter is better for text that must actually contain capitals, such as forms and emails.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. The conversion happens inside your browser and the text never leaves your device. Nothing is saved, so closing or refreshing the page removes the input. That makes the tool suitable for contracts, personal messages and other sensitive content.
