Slash Text Generator

Cross out text with a diagonal slash through each character instead of a flat strikethrough, then paste it anywhere. The slash text generator is free, offers a long and a short slash, and runs in your browser without uploading your text.

How to use the slash text generator

Slashed text is a strikethrough with a sharper edge: the line runs diagonally through each character instead of flat across the middle.

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input box.
  2. The slashed version appears in the output box as you type.
  3. Open the Slash style menu and choose Long slash or Short slash.
  4. Click Copy, or Download .txt to save it.
  5. Paste it into your post, bio, message or comment.

Every character except a line break receives its own slash, spaces and punctuation included, so the effect stays consistent across a word and a sentence. To slash just one word inside a sentence, convert that word alone and paste it in. Emoji get the mark too and may look odd, so leave them out.

Long slash, short slash and two useful tricks

  • Long slash, the combining long solidus overlay U+0338, the default: S̸l̸a̸s̸h̸. A tall stroke that crosses capitals and ascenders and reads as cancelled or forbidden.
  • Short slash, the combining short solidus overlay U+0337: S̷l̷a̷s̷h̷. A smaller cut through the centre that keeps the word easier to read.

Worked example. The input Slash has five characters and the output has ten code points, one slash after each letter. How the stroke sits depends on the font, so if the long version looks crowded in one app, try the short one.

The same overlay explains two handy symbols. In most fonts, a plain equals sign followed by U+0338 is drawn as the not-equal sign ≠, which is how the standard itself defines it, and a zero with a slash gives the programmer slashed zero. So converting a single = or 0 gives a quick way to type those marks in a field with no symbol menu.

Slash against strikethrough, and the limits

A flat strikethrough says that something used to be true, such as an old price. A diagonal slash says not allowed, void or cancelled, and it tends to draw the eye more. The strikethrough text generator covers the flat version, and the underline text generator draws a line beneath the letters, using the same combining-character technique.

A few limits apply to all three:

  • The marks double the character count, which matters in name and post limits. The character counter shows the real figure.
  • Slashing reduces legibility, so keep it to a word or short phrase and leave essential details in plain letters.
  • Screen readers usually ignore the slash and read the plain word, so do not rely on it alone to show that something is cancelled.
  • Some platforms strip combining characters from usernames, in which case the plain word remains.

Search still sees your original letters, since the marks sit beside them. To clear the slashes, run the text through Remove Text Formatting.

Short examples to copy the idea from

A slash reads as a prohibition more than a correction, which suggests where it fits.

  • Cancelled plans. Slash the day or time that is off, as in D̸a̸y̸ ̸2̸, and write the replacement beside it.
  • Retired names and handles. A bio can show an old handle slashed and the new one in plain text.
  • Forbidden items. A short rule such as a slashed word in a house list reads at a glance as not allowed.
  • Maths and code snippets. A single converted = shows the not-equal symbol, and a converted 0 shows the slashed zero, for places that have no symbol keyboard.

It helps to pick the long or short slash by the word. The long slash suits capitals and tall letters, while the short slash is gentler on small words, where the long one can swallow the letter. Compare the two on the same word before you copy.

The tool slashes spaces as well, so a phrase gets a slash between each word. That is a feature if you want the whole phrase struck out and a nuisance if you wanted gaps to stay clean. In that case convert word by word and join the pieces with normal spaces. Finally, keep the slashed part short, because every slashed character is harder to read than a plain one.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

What is the difference between slash text and strikethrough text?

Strikethrough draws a horizontal line through the middle of the letters, while slash text draws a diagonal line through each one. Both are built from Unicode combining characters and work in the same places. The slash simply looks sharper and reads more like a forbidden or void mark.

Does slashed text work on Instagram and Discord?

Yes. Both accept Unicode in bios, captions, names and messages, so the slashed letters paste in and display on most devices. Some usernames and handles strip combining marks, in which case only the plain word is kept, and very long names may hit the length limit sooner.

Why does the slash look different in another app?

The font of the app displaying the text decides the position and angle of the slash. Some fonts centre the stroke neatly while others offset it. Switching between Long slash and Short slash in the Slash style menu often gives a better fit in a particular app.

Can I slash numbers and symbols too?

Yes. Digits, punctuation and spaces all receive a slash along with the letters, so a cancelled price or date works. Only line breaks are skipped. Converting a single 0 produces the programmer slashed zero, and a single equals sign usually displays as the not-equal sign.

Is the slash text generator free and does it store my text?

It is free with no account, and the conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or saved, and there is no limit on how much text you convert or how often you copy or download the result.
