How to use the salary to hourly calculator

The tool opens with a 50,000 salary on a 40-hour, 52-week year, and it recalculates whenever a field changes.

  1. Use the Convert menu to pick Annual salary to hourly rate, or Hourly rate to annual salary.
  2. Type the Amount. It is read as a yearly salary or an hourly rate depending on your choice.
  3. Set Hours per week. Use your contract figure, such as 37.5 or 35, rather than the default 40. Decimals are accepted.
  4. Set Weeks per year, up to 53. Leave it at 52 if holidays are paid, and lower it by the number of unpaid weeks otherwise.
  5. Change the Currency symbol if needed.

The large figure is the converted result. A list shows Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Every two weeks, Monthly and Yearly pay, plus Hours worked per year. All amounts are gross, before tax, pension and other deductions.

Choosing the hours and weeks is the part that needs thought. Use the hours your contract pays for, not the hours you are present, and think about whether bank holidays and annual leave are paid. A part-time role of 20 hours a week is entered as 20, not scaled from a full-time figure. If your hours change from week to week, work out an average first, because the tool applies one fixed pattern to the whole year.

The conversion formula and worked examples

Everything rests on paid hours in a year: hours per week × weeks per year. On the defaults that is 40 × 52 = 2,080. Then hourly = salary / (hours × weeks) and salary = hourly × hours × weeks. Weekly pay is the yearly figure divided by the weeks, every two weeks is double that, and monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by 12. Daily pay is the weekly figure divided by five, so the tool always assumes a five-day week.

30 an hour, 35 h, 48 weeks1,68050,400.00 a year

Monthly pay is a twelfth of the year, which is slightly more than four weekly payments because a month averages about 4.33 weeks. Pay every two weeks happens 26 times a year, which is why it is not simply half of the monthly figure.

Comparing offers fairly

The same salary means different hourly pay depending on the week behind it. A 50,000 salary is 27.47 an hour on a 35-hour week, 24.04 on 40 hours and 21.37 on 45 hours. When you compare an hourly job with a salaried one, convert both using the hours you will really work, including any unpaid breaks the contract does not count.

Unpaid leave matters in the other direction. An hourly worker paid 22.50 for 40 hours who takes two unpaid weeks should set weeks per year to 50, which gives 45,000 a year rather than 46,800. Overtime, bonuses, pension contributions and health cover are not in the calculation, and they can outweigh a small difference in base rate.

To express a raise as a percentage, use the percentage calculator. If a timesheet records 1.75 hours, the time converter helps you read that as 1 hour 45 minutes. To compare offers over several months of pay, the average calculator will average the figures. Results are gross estimates for general information and not tax or financial advice.

One more caution concerns salaried roles with unpaid overtime. If a contract says 37.5 hours but you regularly work 45, the effective hourly rate is lower than the contract rate. Entering the hours you truly work gives a more honest comparison, and it is often the figure that decides whether a lower-paid role with shorter, predictable hours is actually the better deal.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by the paid hours in a year, which is hours per week times weeks per year. On a 40-hour, 52-week year that is 2,080 hours, so 60,000 equals about 28.85 an hour. If your week is shorter, enter your own hours and the calculator adjusts the rate.

What is 50,000 a year per hour?

On 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 50,000 a year is about 24.04 an hour, 192.31 a day, 961.54 a week and 4,166.67 a month. On a 37.5-hour week it rises to about 25.64 an hour. These are gross figures before any tax or deductions.

How many working hours are in a year?

A full-time year is usually counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950, and with 4 unpaid weeks on a 40-hour schedule it is 1,920. The calculator shows Hours worked per year for whichever figures you set.

Is the result before or after tax?

Before tax. Every figure is gross pay, so income tax, social security or national insurance, pension contributions and other deductions have not been taken off. Take-home pay will be lower, and by how much depends on where you live and your own circumstances.

Why is monthly pay not four weeks of pay?

A year has 52 weeks but 12 months, so a month averages about 4.33 weeks. The calculator divides the yearly amount by 12 for monthly pay, which makes it higher than four weekly payments. Every two weeks is exactly two weeks of pay and happens 26 times a year.
