How to use the cursed text generator

Cursed text keeps the words legible while making them look slightly wrong, as if something has crept into the letters.

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input box.
  2. Move the Intensity slider, which runs from 1 to 3 and starts at 1.
  3. Read the cursed version in the output box. The marks are chosen at random, so the pattern is different each time.
  4. Click Copy when you like what you see, or Download .txt to keep it.
  5. Paste it into your post, name or message.

The whole text is generated again whenever you change the input or the slider, so copy a version you like before you touch anything else. To get a fresh pattern for the same words, nudge the slider to another value and back. Spaces and line breaks receive no marks.

How much corruption each level adds

For every letter the tool adds up to a set number of marks above it and the same number below, and gives one letter in four a mark through the middle. The number of marks is drawn at random, so counts vary, but the averages are predictable:

IntensityMost marks above or belowTypical marks per letter
11About 1.3
22About 2.0
33About 2.7

Worked example. A ten-letter word at intensity 2 gains roughly twenty invisible marks, so it ends up around thirty characters long even though it still looks like ten letters. That growth counts toward name and post limits, so check the total with the character counter if space is tight.

The marks are Unicode combining diacritical marks, the same family that puts an accent on é. They sit on top of your original letters, so the underlying words are still there.

Cursed text compared with Zalgo, and where it fits

Both effects use the same raw material, but the settings differ. The Zalgo glitch text generator goes up to intensity 5, lets you switch the above, through and below directions on and off, and piles marks high enough that lines can overlap. Cursed text stays at the light end, so a name or title is still easy to read. That makes it the better pick for a Halloween event name, a horror channel title, a clan tag or an ominous reply in a group chat.

  • Use intensity 1 for names and titles, where space is tight and clarity matters.
  • Use 2 or 3 for a short phrase inside a post, and surround it with normal text for impact.
  • Expect some platforms to strip or cap combining characters in usernames, which leaves plain text.
  • Screen readers may skip the marks or read them as accent names, so do not rely on cursed text to carry important information.

To clear the effect from pasted text, use Remove Text Formatting. For a different kind of strange, the upside down text generator flips and reverses the letters instead.

Choosing an intensity for the job

The slider has only three positions, so the choice is simple once you know what each one is for.

  • Intensity 1 adds about one mark per letter and keeps the text easy to read at a glance. Use it for names, clan tags and titles.
  • Intensity 2 gives a clearly unsettled look and still works for a short line in a caption or a story overlay.
  • Intensity 3 adds the most marks and suits a single dramatic word, such as the last line of a creepy post.

Because each press regenerates the pattern, it is worth trying the same setting a few times. Some patterns are balanced and some leave one letter looking bare, and you can choose the one you prefer before copying.

You can also combine effects. Paste output from another generator, for example the bold text generator, into the Input box and the marks are added after each character of that text, spaces excepted. Check the result carefully, since stacked effects can make the letters harder to read.

For a quick test, paste the finished text into the field where you plan to use it before you publish. If the app trims the marks, you will see plain letters straight away and can try a lower setting or a different platform field.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

What is cursed text?

Cursed text is normal writing with a light scattering of Unicode combining marks added above, below and through the letters, so it looks corrupted or haunted while staying readable. It is a gentler relative of Zalgo text, which stacks far more marks until the words are hard to recognise.

Why is the output different every time I convert the same text?

The generator picks the marks and how many to add at random, so each run gives a new pattern, and it runs again whenever you edit the input or move the slider. Copy the version you like straight away, because changing anything replaces it with a fresh random result.

Does cursed text work in Discord usernames?

Usually yes, especially at intensity 1. Discord accepts combining marks in nicknames and server names, although a long result may be cut off by the name length limit, since the hidden marks add to the character count. Save the higher settings for messages rather than names.

Will cursed text break my post layout?

At intensity 1 or 2 it rarely does, because only a few marks sit on each letter. Intensity 3 can make lines slightly taller in some apps, so preview the post first. Heavier results from Zalgo generators are much more likely to overflow into neighbouring lines.

Is the cursed text generator free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored, and you can generate and copy as many variations as you like. Clear removes the input and the result together.
