How to use the Roman numeral date converter

The tool has two panels: one for a whole date and one for a single number.

  1. In Date to Roman numerals, pick a day in the Date field. It starts on today's date.
  2. Set Order to Day · Month · Year, Month · Day · Year or Year · Month · Day.
  3. Set Separator to Dot (·), Slash (/), Dash (-), Period (.) or Space.
  4. Read the large result, such as XXV·X·MMXXVI for 25 October 2026, and press Copy.
  5. For a single value, type it into Number (1 to 3999) in the second panel and copy the numeral beneath it.

The day, month and year are converted separately, so 7 March 2024 reads VII·III·MMXXIV. The number panel goes one way only, from number to numeral. It does not read numerals back into numbers, and values outside 1 to 3999 show a prompt instead. The result uses ordinary capital letters, so it pastes cleanly anywhere.

How Roman numerals are built

Seven letters carry the values: I 1, V 5, X 10, L 50, C 100, D 500 and M 1000. Values are added from largest to smallest, so MMXXVI is 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 2026. A smaller letter before a larger one is subtracted. The tool uses only the six standard pairs, IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM, and never repeats a letter more than three times, so 4 is IV, never IIII, and 99 is XCIX. Each decimal digit converts on its own: 1994 is M + CM + XC + IV, which is MCMXCIV.

Choosing the order and separator

The same date reads differently depending on the order. For 14 February 2024 the three layouts are:

  • Day, month, year: XIV·II·MMXXIV
  • Month, day, year: II·XIV·MMXXIV
  • Year, month, day: MMXXIV·II·XIV

Here the 14 cannot be a month, which removes any doubt. Many dates are not so lucky: V·VI·MMXXIV is 5 June in day-first countries and 6 May in the United States. Pick the order your readers expect, and tell them when it matters. Invitations, anniversary prints, engraved rings and cornerstones all use the same layouts, and a numeral date often sits above a couple's names or beneath a building's title. If the date will be read by people from several countries, year first is the least ambiguous order, because it does not clash with day-first or month-first habits. For a tattoo or engraving, a middle dot or small spaces look tidy, but check the final spelling against this converter before anything is permanent, because IV and VI are easy to swap.

Limits and common mistakes

Digit by digit, 2026 is 2000 (MM), 0 (nothing), 20 (XX) and 6 (VI), and 1984 is M + CM + LXXX + IV, which is MCMLXXXIV. A few values worth knowing: 14 is XIV, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD and 3999 is MMMCMXCIX.

The converter stops at 3999, because standard numerals have no letter above M and no clean way to write larger values without an overline. Clock faces often show four as IIII, a traditional exception, but this tool always writes the standard IV. Film credits use numerals for copyright years, so MCMXCIX means 1999. There is no zero, so dates never need one. Typical errors are writing 2026 as XXVI, which reads as 26, or using IC for 99. Years follow predictable shapes, which also makes them easy to check by eye: 1900 to 1999 begin MCM, so 1999 is MCMXCIX, and 2000 to 2099 begin MM.

Years of 4000 and above cannot be written, so the year part of the date comes out empty. Dates come from the browser date picker and use the Gregorian calendar. To count the days between two dates, use the date difference calculator. To write amounts in words instead, try the number to words converter, and for other bases the number base converter.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I write a date in Roman numerals?

Convert the day, month and year separately and join them with a separator. 25 October 2026 is XXV for 25, X for 10 and MMXXVI for 2026, giving XXV·X·MMXXVI. Decide on day-first or month-first order before you finish.

What is 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI. The two Ms are 2000, the two Xs are 20 and VI is 6. Other recent years follow the same pattern: 2024 is MMXXIV, 2025 is MMXXV and 2030 is MMXXX. The year 2000 is simply MM.

What separator should I use for a Roman numeral tattoo?

There is no rule, so choose what suits the design. Middle dots are the most common because they are discreet and traditional. Periods, dashes and spaces also work, while slashes look more modern. Avoid anything that could be mistaken for the numeral I.

Why does the converter stop at 3999?

Standard numerals have no symbol larger than M, 1000, and allow at most three repeats, so MMMCMXCIX is the largest number written in the usual way. Larger values need a bar over the letters to multiply by 1000, which most fonts cannot show.

Is there a zero in Roman numerals?

No. Roman numerals were used for counting positive whole numbers and have no digit for zero, which is why a date or year is written without one. Medieval writers sometimes used N, from the Latin nulla, but it was never part of the standard system.
