How to use the PDF rotator

Fixing a sideways or upside-down document takes a moment, but the tool has no page preview, so note the page numbers in your PDF viewer first.

  1. Drop one PDF on the upload area or click it to choose the file.
  2. Open Rotate and choose 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise. A scan fed in sideways usually needs one quarter turn, and a page scanned upside down needs 180.
  3. Leave Pages (empty = all) blank to turn every page, or type the pages to change, for example 2, 5-8.
  4. Click Rotate PDF. The result card reports how many pages were turned, for example 3 of 10 pages.
  5. Click Download to save the file, which gets -rotated added to its name, then open it in a viewer to confirm the orientation.

If different pages need different turns, run the tool again on the downloaded file with a new range. Your original file is left untouched, and the corrected copy is a separate download, so you can always go back.

How the rotation is applied

Each PDF page has a rotation setting, always a multiple of 90, that tells viewers how far to turn it for display and printing. The tool, built on pdf-lib, reads the current value of each chosen page, adds your angle and writes back the total modulo 360. The page content, with its text, images and drawings, is not touched or recompressed, so quality is unchanged and the file size barely moves. The turns add up, which the table shows.

Page wasYou choosePage becomes
0°90° clockwise90°
90°90° clockwise180°
270°90° clockwise0°
90°90° anticlockwise0°
180°180°0°

Because it is arithmetic, any turn can be undone by applying the opposite one. The result note may show 270° for an anticlockwise turn, which is the same movement counted clockwise.

A worked example and what to check

Suppose a 10-page scan opens with pages 4 and 5 lying on their side, and pages 7 and 9 upside down. Run the tool once with Rotate set to 90° clockwise and Pages set to 4-5, download the file, then run it again with 180° and Pages set to 7, 9. All ten pages now read upright. A viewer alone, such as a browser tab or Preview, usually turns pages only for display and forgets the change, whereas this tool saves it in the file.

Landscape tables inside portrait reports, faxes that arrive rotated and phone photos of documents are the usual reasons to rotate. Annotations and form fields on a page turn with it, because they are positioned relative to the page, not the screen. Page numbers beyond the end of the file are ignored and listed in the result note, and a password-protected PDF is refused with a message. Keep in mind that rotation changes how a page is displayed, not the content, so a few image-based previewers that ignore the setting may still show the raw page. To straighten pictures rather than PDFs, use the rotate and flip image tool.

Limits and related tools

This tool turns pages in steps of 90 degrees only, and every page you select gets the same turn in a single run. It also does not tell you which pages are wrong, so scroll through the file in a viewer and write down the page numbers before you start. It cannot straighten a slightly crooked scan, detect orientation by itself or crop margins. Text recognition gives more reliable results on upright pages, so rotate first when you plan to extract text from a scan with the image to text converter. After rotating, you can join the corrected file with others using the merge PDF tool, or take out only the pages you need with split PDF. Processing happens in your browser, so contracts, statements and scanned identification are not uploaded, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Add the file, choose 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise in Rotate, leave Pages empty for all pages or type a range, and click Rotate PDF. Download the result. The new orientation is stored inside the file, so it opens the right way up everywhere, unlike rotating in a viewer alone.

Can I rotate just one page in a PDF?

Yes. Type the page number in the Pages box, or several numbers and ranges separated by commas, such as 3, 7-9. Only those pages are turned and the rest are left as they are. Run the tool again on the downloaded file if other pages need a different direction.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality or increase file size?

No. The tool changes only each page rotation setting, a single number that tells viewers how to display the page. Text, images and graphics are not re-rendered or recompressed, so quality is identical and the size barely changes. Applying the opposite rotation restores the original exactly.

Is my PDF uploaded when I rotate it online here?

No. The pdf-lib library runs in your browser, so the document stays on your device from start to finish. Nothing is sent to a server, stored or logged, which suits contracts, statements and scanned identification. The tool also works with your internet connection turned off once the page is open.

Why does my rotated PDF still look sideways in some apps?

Almost every viewer honours the page rotation setting, but a few image-based previewers and very old programs ignore it and draw the raw page. Check the file in a standard reader such as Acrobat, Chrome or Preview. Also check that the Pages box included the page you meant to turn.
