How to use the underline text generator

Most chat and social apps ignore the usual Ctrl+U shortcut. This tool bakes the line into the characters instead.

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input box.
  2. The underlined version appears in the output box as you type.
  3. Open the Line style menu and choose Single underline or Double underline.
  4. Click Copy, or select the output and copy it yourself.
  5. Paste the result into your post, profile, message or subject line.

Every character except a line break gets the mark, spaces and punctuation included, so a phrase is underlined continuously from first letter to last. Emoji receive the mark as well and may look odd, so leave them out of underlined text. To underline one word inside a sentence, convert that word alone.

Single against double, with a worked example

The two options use different combining marks:

  • Single underline, the combining low line U+0332: N̲o̲t̲e̲. The familiar printed look and the lowest-key emphasis.
  • Double underline, the combining double low line U+0333: N̳o̳t̳e̳. Two lines beneath each letter. In accounting a double rule marks a grand total, so it also works for the heading line of a list.

Worked example. To label a short notice, convert only the heading. The word Note has four letters and becomes eight code points, N̲o̲t̲e̲, which you then place in front of ordinary text: N̲o̲t̲e̲: bring photo ID. Converting the whole sentence would double its length for no gain.

The font in the destination app draws the line. Letters with descenders such as g, p and y can collide with it, and some older phones render the double line unevenly. If underlining is not quite what you want, the bold text generator and the strikethrough text generator give other kinds of emphasis.

When an underline misleads, and what it costs

On the web an underline means a link. Readers may tap an underlined phrase in your bio or post and feel misled when nothing happens, so reserve it for headings and short labels, and never underline text that looks like a call to action.

The technique has a few other costs:

  • The text is twice as long in characters, which counts against limits. The character counter shows the real total.
  • Screen readers normally skip the marks and read the plain words, so the emphasis is visual only.
  • Some platforms strip combining characters from usernames, and then the underline simply disappears.
  • Search still sees your original letters, because the marks sit beside them rather than replacing them.

In a document where real formatting exists, such as a word processor, use that. To clear the marks from pasted text, run it through Remove Text Formatting.

Short examples to copy the idea from

These are the layouts where an underline earns its place, each built by converting only the underlined part:

  • A section label in a bio. Underline one word, M̲e̲n̲u̲ or S̲e̲r̲v̲i̲c̲e̲s̲, and follow it with a plain list on the next lines.
  • A total in a plain-text invoice or message. The Double underline, T̳o̳t̳a̳l̳, mirrors the double rule that accountants draw under a final figure.
  • A required field in a text template. Underline the word that people must change, such as the name or the date.
  • A heading in a subject line. One underlined word at the start separates the topic from the rest of the line.

Things that tend to go wrong: converting an entire paragraph, which makes it hard to read and doubles its length; underlining a phrase that looks like a link; and expecting the line to stay put when text is later reformatted. Because the line belongs to each character, it follows the letters if the text is copied into a new place, but it will not extend across a gap you add afterwards.

If you only need a plain heading, consider putting it in capitals instead. Capitals add no extra characters and read perfectly on every device and screen reader.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I underline text on Instagram?

Instagram has no underline feature in bios, captions or comments. Paste your words into the underline text generator, copy the result and paste it into the app. The line is built from Unicode combining characters, so it appears the same on iPhone, Android and the web.

Can I underline text in a Discord name or channel topic?

Yes. Discord supports markdown underline in messages but not in server names, channel topics or nicknames. Text from this generator works in those fields because the underline travels with the characters themselves, although very long names may still be cut off by Discord length limits.

Why does the underline look uneven in some fonts?

The destination font positions the combining low line, so letters with descenders such as g or y may overlap it and some fonts leave tiny gaps. You cannot fix this from the sending side, but the Single underline is usually drawn more consistently than the Double underline.

Does underlined text work in an email subject line?

Usually yes, because subject lines accept Unicode but no formatting, and most mail clients show the marks. Use it for a word or two, since long runs of combining characters can look cluttered in a narrow inbox preview and may be treated warily by spam filters.

Is the underline text generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and has no length limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded, and you can copy the result or download it as a text file as often as you need.
