How to use the image converter

The converter handles one file or many, and each result is ready to download as soon as it is drawn.

  1. Drop your images on the upload area or click it to choose them. Anything your browser can decode works, which normally covers PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG.
  2. Open Convert to and choose PNG, JPEG or WebP. PNG is selected at first.
  3. Set Quality for JPEG and WebP. The default is 75. PNG is lossless, so the slider has no effect on it.
  4. If you are going to JPEG, pick Background for transparent areas (JPEG). Transparent pixels are filled with this colour, white by default, because JPEG cannot store transparency.
  5. Click Convert images. Every result card shows the old and new sizes and the change of type, for example jpeg to png.
  6. Download one file at a time, or use Download all. The picture keeps its original width and height.

PNG, JPEG or WebP: how they differ

Each format has a job it does well. Converting changes the container and the way pixels are stored, so the right choice depends on what the picture contains.

FormatCompressionTransparencySuits
PNGLosslessYesLogos, icons, screenshots, diagrams with sharp edges
JPEGLossyNoPhotographs, email, print shops, old software
WebPLossy or losslessYesWeb pages that need small files

WebP files are commonly 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at similar quality, but a few older desktop programs and upload forms still reject them. A photograph saved as PNG is far larger than the same photograph as JPEG or WebP, with no visible gain.

Common conversions and what to expect

Quality matters most for the lossy targets. At the default of 75 a photograph is usually much smaller with little visible change, and raising it toward 90 keeps more fine texture at the cost of a bigger file. Converting from PNG to JPEG usually shrinks a photograph a great deal and can enlarge a flat screenshot, so check the size shown on the card. Transparent logos get the background colour you chose. If the logo will sit on a dark page, pick a matching dark colour instead of white so soft edges blend in.

Converting from JPEG to PNG does not restore detail that JPEG already discarded. The file simply grows, because every pixel is now stored without loss. It is useful only if you need to avoid further lossy saves. Converting between lossy formats adds another round of loss, so work from the original file when you can.

WebP and AVIF to JPEG is the usual fix when a picture saved from a website will not open in an editor. SVG files are drawn at the size the browser reports for them, so give the SVG explicit width and height for a predictable bitmap. Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame. Photos in HEIC format from some phones cannot be decoded by most desktop browsers; they may be skipped or reported as undecodable, so export them as JPEG on the phone first.

Next steps, privacy and limits

Output files take the same base name as the original with a new extension, and the extension follows the type the browser actually produced. Redrawing on a canvas keeps pixels only, so EXIF data such as GPS position and camera model is left out. The tool does not resize or compress beyond the quality setting. To change dimensions use the image resizer, to shrink weight further use the image compressor, and to combine converted pictures into one document use the image to PDF converter. To go the other way and turn PDF pages into pictures, see the PDF to JPG converter. Everything is processed on your device, so confidential designs and ID photos are not uploaded. Converting many files at once is fine: each one is handled separately, and a file that cannot be decoded produces an error rather than silently disappearing from the batch. Very large pictures depend on the memory your device can spare.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I convert a PNG to JPG without a black background?

Set Convert to JPEG and choose a colour under Background for transparent areas (JPEG) before clicking Convert images. JPEG has no transparency, so see-through pixels must be filled, and the converter paints your chosen colour, white by default, behind the picture. Pick a colour that matches where the image will be used.

Can I convert WebP to JPG or PNG in my browser?

Yes. Current browsers decode WebP natively, so drop the file in, choose JPEG or PNG in Convert to and download the result. This is the quick fix when a picture saved from a website will not open in older software. Choose PNG if the WebP has transparency you want to keep.

Does converting an image reduce its quality?

Converting to PNG loses nothing, but PNG cannot bring back detail an earlier JPEG already discarded. Converting to JPEG or WebP applies lossy compression set by the Quality slider, and at 80 or above the difference is rarely visible. Avoid repeated lossy conversions, and start from the highest-quality original you have.

Are my images uploaded when I use this converter?

No. The conversion runs with the Canvas API inside your browser, so files stay on your device from start to finish. There is no server queue and no storage, which makes it suitable for confidential documents, ID photos and unreleased design work. Your own device memory is the only limit.

Why will my image not convert?

The browser could not decode the file. HEIC photos, damaged files and unusual formats are the common causes, and files with an unrecognised type are skipped at upload. Open the picture in an editor and export it as JPEG or PNG first. SVG, GIF, BMP and AVIF normally work in current browsers.
