How to extract pages from a PDF

This page is the PDF splitter with its mode already set to extracting a range and the page box prefilled with 1-3. Change the pages to whatever you need.

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box, paste it, or click to choose the file. One PDF is handled at a time.
  2. Leave Mode on Extract a page range into one PDF. The other choice, Every page as a separate PDF, is for splitting a whole file apart.
  3. In Pages (e.g. 1-3, 7, 10-12), replace the 1-3 with your own pages. Separate single pages and ranges with commas.
  4. Press Extract pages. The result line tells you how many pages were kept out of how many, and the new file size.
  5. Press Download. The new file is named after the original with the page list added, so report.pdf with pages 1-3 becomes report-pages-1-3.pdf.

How the page list is read: a worked example

The page box is more flexible than it looks, and knowing the rules avoids surprises. Take a 15 page report and type 1-3, 7, 10-12. The tool keeps pages 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 11 and 12, which makes a new PDF of 7 pages. Spaces do not matter.

  • Order follows what you type. Entering 12, 3 puts page 12 first and page 3 second in the new file.
  • Repeats are dropped. A page named twice, or covered by two overlapping ranges, appears once.
  • A backward range is turned around. Typing 5-3 is read as 3-5, in normal order. If you want pages in reverse order, list them one by one.
  • Out-of-range pages are skipped. On the 15 page file, 1-3, 20 keeps pages 1 to 3 and the result line says page 20 was ignored because the file has 15 pages.
  • Anything unreadable is ignored. If nothing valid remains, the tool asks you for a range such as 1-3, 7.

Page numbers refer to the position in the file, counting from 1, not to the numbers printed on the pages. A report with a cover and roman numeral preface may show page 1 of the content as position 5, so check the position in your PDF viewer first.

What is copied, and what to expect from the new file

The pages are copied across with a PDF library, not redrawn as pictures. That means text stays real text, so it can still be selected and searched, and vector graphics stay sharp at any zoom. Nothing is rendered to images, which is also why the job finishes quickly even for long documents.

Three honest caveats apply. First, the new file can be larger than you expect from a simple share of pages, because a page may carry fonts and images that it needs. Second, document-level extras such as bookmarks or a clickable table of contents may not come along, so do not rely on them in the extract. Third, a password-protected PDF is refused with a message asking you to remove the password first.

If the result is still heavy, extract only the pages you need. If a scanned page is sideways, correct it afterward with Rotate PDF. Because the work happens in your browser, the file is never uploaded, which is helpful for contracts, medical letters and statements.

Typical jobs and the right neighboring tool

Extracting is the right move when you know which pages you want to keep. Examples: one chapter from a long manual, the signature page of a contract, three invoices out of a monthly bundle, or the answer sheet from an exam pack.

Sometimes the reverse question is easier. If you want everything except a few pages, use Delete PDF Pages, where you name the pages to remove, instead of listing nearly the whole file here. To split an entire document into one file per page, switch the mode to Every page as a separate PDF on the Split PDF page. Once you have your extracts, Merge PDF joins several of them into one document, and Reorder PDF Pages changes the sequence of a file that already exists.

The original PDF is only read, never altered, so you can run the tool again with a different list as often as you like.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How do I extract pages 1 to 3 and page 7 from a PDF?

Type 1-3, 7 into the Pages box with Mode set to Extract a page range into one PDF, then press Extract pages. You get a new PDF of four pages, in that order. Add more ranges with commas, such as 1-3, 7, 10-12.

Does extracting pages change my original PDF?

No. The original file is only read, and the extracted pages are written to a separate new PDF that you download. You can run the tool again on the same file with a different page list as many times as you like.

What happens if I type a page that does not exist?

Pages beyond the end of the file are ignored. The valid pages are still extracted, and the result line lists the skipped numbers and states how many pages the file has. If none of the numbers are valid, the tool asks you for a proper range.

Can I choose the order of the extracted pages?

Yes, to a degree. Pages are placed in the order you type them, so 9, 2 puts page 9 before page 2. A backward range such as 5-3 is read as 3-5 in normal order, so list pages one by one for a reverse sequence.

Is the text in the extracted pages still searchable?

Yes, if it was searchable in the original. Pages are copied as they are, not redrawn as images, so real text stays selectable and graphics stay sharp. A scanned PDF that holds only pictures stays picture-only, since the tool does not add text recognition.
