3 Minute Timer

This page counts down three minutes and rings when the time is up, which suits boxing rounds, short speeches and a quiet pause. It is free, shows a progress bar, puts the time left in the tab title and runs in your browser without sending anything.

How to use the 3 minute timer

Three minutes is already entered. You can start immediately, or tailor the timer first.

  1. Confirm that Minutes shows 3 and that Hours and Seconds show 0. The display reads 03:00.
  2. Enter a Label (optional) such as Round or Talk. It shows above the digits.
  3. Make sure Play a sound when time is up is ticked if you want an audible bell.
  4. Press Start when your round or talk begins. Pause and Resume use the same button.
  5. When the alarm sounds, press Start again for the next round, or Reset to go back to 03:00.

That last step matters for rounds: after the alarm, one press of Start begins a fresh three minutes with no need to reset first. The keyboard shortcuts help when your hands are busy: Space starts and pauses when no button has focus, and R resets while the timer is stopped. Changes to the boxes during a run do not alter the countdown already under way, so press Reset before you try a different length.

Rounds, rests and a second timer

Rounds in professional men's boxing last three minutes, usually with a one-minute rest between them. Amateur and other formats use different round lengths, so treat three minutes as one common example and not a rule. The same shape suits sparring, bag work, language drills and any practice divided into rounds.

This page has no round counter and no automatic rest, so a simple workaround is to open the 1 minute timer in a second browser tab for the break. Keep the tabs side by side if you can, because a tab hidden behind another may ring a moment late, although the time on its clock stays right. Put a label such as Round on the first tab and Rest on the second so the screen tells you which one is running.

Remember that a phone with a locked screen may not play the alarm. A real bell or a phone alarm is a safer choice for an organized class.

Rounds are not only for fighting sports. Language teachers use three-minute speaking rounds with a partner, musicians run three-minute drills on one tricky bar, and runners use three-minute efforts inside an interval session. Whatever the activity, say out loud what the round is for before you press Start, so that the alarm marks a clear change from one task to the next.

A three-minute talk, a pause and a cup of tea

At roughly 130 spoken words a minute, a three-minute talk comes to about 390 words. The timer counts down, so plan the talk against the display, not against time elapsed:

Part of the talkDisplay shows
Opening, 30 seconds03:00 to 02:30
Main points, 2 minutes02:30 to 00:30
Closing, 30 seconds00:30 to 00:00

Check the length of your script with the word counter first.

Three minutes is also a short length for a mindfulness pause: sit, breathe, and let the alarm end it. Black tea is often steeped for around three to five minutes, but strength varies, so follow the packet. If you are timing eggs, a three-minute boil is not a standard doneness, so use the egg timer with its doneness menu. The countdown timer has all the controls if you want to change the length.

Short talks reward rehearsal. Run the clock once while you speak the whole thing aloud, note the time on the display when you finish each part, and compare with the table. Most people find they run long on the opening and rush the close, so cut a sentence from the start before you speed up at the end. When the alarm sounds, the talk should already be over, with a closing line that you have practiced.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How long is a boxing round?

Professional men's boxing rounds are three minutes, with a one-minute rest between them. Amateur bouts, women's bouts and other combat sports often use different lengths, so check the rules of your own event. This timer offers three minutes as one common example.

Is three minutes the right time to steep tea?

It depends on the tea. Black tea is often steeped for around three to five minutes, while green and white teas usually need less. Strength is a matter of taste, so follow the packet and adjust to what you like.

How many words is a three-minute speech?

About 390 words at a typical speaking pace of 130 words a minute. Pauses, slides and audience reactions use up time, so many speakers aim for a little fewer. Read your draft aloud against the timer to find your own pace.

How do I run several rounds in a row?

After each alarm, press Start and a new three minutes begins. There is no automatic repeat and no round counter, so keep count yourself or in a note. Reset sets the display back to 03:00 without starting the clock.

Can I time a rest period at the same time?

Not in the same window, because this page runs one countdown. Open the 1 minute timer in a second tab for the rest and label each tab so you can tell them apart. Both pages need to stay open to ring.
