60 Minute Timer

Start a one hour countdown that runs from 01:00:00 down to zero and sounds an alarm at the end. The progress bar and tab title show how much time is left, so you can work in another window. It is free and runs in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

How to use the 60 minute timer

For an hour the page uses the Hours box: it opens with 1 in Hours and 0 in Minutes. Typing 60 into Minutes gives the same result, because the three fields are added together.

  1. Read the display. Because the time reaches an hour, it uses the longer form 01:00:00 (hours, minutes, seconds) instead of the usual minutes and seconds.
  2. Change Hours, Minutes or Seconds if your hour needs trimming, for example 0 hours 55 minutes for a parking limit with a margin.
  3. Add a Label (optional) such as Roast or Deep work, then decide on Play a sound when time is up.
  4. Press Start. The tab title shows the time left, which is helpful on a long job because you can check it from another tab.
  5. Use Pause and Resume for interruptions, Reset to return to one hour, and Full screen for a clock you can read from the other side of a room.

Space and R work as shortcuts for start or pause and for reset when stopped.

An hour is long enough that you may forget the timer is running. A clear label and a tab that stays in a visible window make it harder to lose track of.

What fits into an hour

An hour is the length of many meetings, classes and appointments, and it divides in several useful ways:

PlanResult
50 + 10A focused block with a ten minute break
2 x 30Two equal tasks
4 x 15Four quick rounds, such as chores for each room
45 + 15A lesson and a recap
25 + 5 + 25 + 5Two focus sessions with breaks

Parking is a practical case. If a meter gives you exactly an hour and a late return risks a fine, setting the timer for 55 minutes leaves a margin to walk back. Laundry and cooking work in a similar way, with the timer prompting you to check a load or a roast. For a roast or any dish, use the recipe and a food thermometer where advised, since an hour is only a reminder to look.

Deep work is the other big use. Some people protect a full hour for one demanding task, with notifications silenced. If you want to know how long such tasks usually take you, run the online stopwatch first, then set the timer to a realistic number.

To see what an hour is in seconds or days, the time converter shows 3,600 seconds and 0.0417 days, which is useful in a spreadsheet.

Keeping a long countdown reliable

The longer a timer runs, the more chances there are for something to interrupt it, so a few precautions matter more at 60 minutes than at 5. The page must stay open for the whole hour. If you close the tab, the countdown stops without warning, and nothing is saved to restart from.

  • Screen and power. The timer asks the browser to keep the screen awake while it runs, in browsers that support it. A laptop on battery may still sleep, and a phone may lock, so plug in and change the sleep settings if the alarm matters.
  • Second alarm. For medicine, a pickup or any deadline with real consequences, set your phone alarm as well. This page is a convenience, and not a safety device.
  • Sound. The alarm is four tones that last a little over a second. It plays once, with no snooze and no repeat, so be near the device when it ends.
  • Shorter checks. Break the hour into smaller stages with a 30 minute timer if you need a check halfway.

For work that continues beyond an hour, the 90 minute timer is available, and the Pomodoro timer handles repeating cycles of focus and breaks. The time calculator can add hour-long sessions together, such as three sessions plus 45 minutes of breaks, which comes to 3 hours 45 minutes in all.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

Why does the 60 minute timer show 01:00:00?

The display adds an hours part once the time reaches an hour. Those digits read hours, minutes and seconds, so 01:00:00 means one hour exactly. Below an hour it switches back to minutes and seconds, such as 59:59, as the countdown goes on.

Is entering 60 minutes the same as entering 1 hour?

Yes. The timer adds the Hours, Minutes and Seconds boxes together, so 60 minutes and 1 hour both equal 3,600 seconds. This page opens with 1 in Hours. You can type 60 in Minutes instead, and the result will be the same.

Can I leave the timer running for an hour with my screen off?

It is risky. A locked phone may pause the page and the sound, and a sleeping laptop cannot play the alarm. The timer requests that the screen stays awake where supported. For anything important, keep the page visible and set a phone alarm too.

How do I set a timer for 55 minutes?

Set the Hours box to 0 and the Minutes box to 55, then press Start. The display reads 55:00. A timer a few minutes short of the full hour is handy when you need time to walk back to a parking meter or finish a lesson.

Does the 60 minute timer sound an alarm more than once?

No. At zero it plays one short alarm of four tones, and the display shows a done state with the message Time is up. There is no snooze or repeat. Press Start or Space to begin another hour, or Reset to put the clock back.
