The days to hours formula

One day is exactly 24 hours, so the formula is hours = days x 24. Going the other way, one hour is about 0.0416667 days. A day in this converter is 24 hours, although calendar days around daylight saving changes can be 23 or 25 hours long. An hour is 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds.

Worked examples with the same factor:

  • 3 days: 3 x 24 = 72 hours
  • 9 days: 9 x 24 = 216 hours
  • 30 days: 30 x 24 = 720 hours

Multiply by 24: 3 days is 72 hours.

To check the converter by hand, take 9 days and apply the rule once: the result should be 216 hours. If you go back again with the reverse factor 0.0416667 you land on 9 days, which confirms that the two directions agree. Rounding the factor to fewer digits for mental math gives a result that is close but not identical, so use the tool when the last digits matter.

Days to hours conversion table

These reference values come from the same factor the converter uses, so they match what you see above. Use the table for common amounts, and the converter for anything else.

Seconds, minutes, hours and days are linked by fixed factors of 60 and 24, so these conversions are exact. The complications come from calendars, not clocks: months have different lengths, years have leap days, and daylight saving time makes some days 23 or 25 hours long. For those cases a date calculator is the better tool, because it follows the real calendar instead of an average. Payroll software, shift planners and project tools often store durations as decimal hours, so people convert in both directions several times a week.

Use the table as a sanity check rather than a substitute for the converter. A half hour is 30 minutes, a quarter of an hour is 15, and a decimal hour of 0.1 is 6 minutes. When you read a timesheet, remember that decimal hours and clock time look similar but are not the same: 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes, not 7 hours 50 minutes.

Where it is used and what to watch for

Project plans, shipping windows and notice periods count days, while systems and contracts may count hours.

Decimal hours are not hours and minutes: 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50 minutes. When the result has a decimal, multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. Payroll systems usually want decimal hours, while schedules want hours and minutes.
