The hours to minutes formula

One hour is exactly 60 minutes, so the formula is minutes = hours x 60. Going the other way, one minute is about 0.0166667 hours. An hour is 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds. A minute is 60 seconds.

Worked examples with the same factor:

  • 2.5 hours: 2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes
  • 7.5 hours: 7.5 x 60 = 450 minutes
  • 25 hours: 25 x 60 = 1,500 minutes

Multiply by 60. For the decimal part, 0.25 hour is 15 minutes, 0.5 is 30 and 0.75 is 45.

To check the converter by hand, take 7.5 hours and apply the rule once: the result should be 450 minutes. If you go back again with the reverse factor 0.0166667 you land on 7.5 hours, which confirms that the two directions agree. Rounding the factor to fewer digits for mental math gives a result that is close but not identical, so use the tool when the last digits matter.

Hours to minutes conversion table

These reference values come from the same factor the converter uses, so they match what you see above. Use the table for common amounts, and the converter for anything else.

Seconds, minutes, hours and days are linked by fixed factors of 60 and 24, so these conversions are exact. The complications come from calendars, not clocks: months have different lengths, years have leap days, and daylight saving time makes some days 23 or 25 hours long. For those cases a date calculator is the better tool, because it follows the real calendar instead of an average. Payroll software, shift planners and project tools often store durations as decimal hours, so people convert in both directions several times a week.

Use the table as a sanity check rather than a substitute for the converter. A half hour is 30 minutes, a quarter of an hour is 15, and a decimal hour of 0.1 is 6 minutes. When you read a timesheet, remember that decimal hours and clock time look similar but are not the same: 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes, not 7 hours 50 minutes.

Where it is used and what to watch for

Timesheets, billing, cooking and travel durations often need decimal hours turned into minutes, such as 2.5 hours being 2 hours 30 minutes.

A day is 24 hours in this converter, but real calendar days change length around daylight saving time, and months and years are not fixed. For dates, use a date calculator rather than multiplying.
