12 Minute Timer

This timer opens at 12:00, a handy length for a timed run, a short study block or a hard-boiled egg. Press Start and an alarm plays at zero, with a bar and the tab title showing the time left. It is free and runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use the 12 minute timer

The page is set to 12 minutes, which is 720 seconds or one fifth of an hour. The Quick start menu does not list a twelve minute option, so it shows Custom time, but the clock above is already correct.

  1. Read the three fields: Hours 0, Minutes 12 and Seconds 0. Change any of them if your plan differs.
  2. Enter a Label (optional), such as Track or Chapter 3, to remind you what the block is for.
  3. Keep Play a sound when time is up ticked if you are moving around or listening to music, or untick it for silent study.
  4. Press Start as you take your first stride, open your book or lower the egg into the water.
  5. Press Pause if you are interrupted and Resume to continue. Reset returns to 12:00, and Full screen shows a large clock on a laptop or tablet propped nearby.

Space starts and pauses, and R resets while the timer is stopped, provided the cursor is outside a text box.

The twelve minute run test

A well known use of this length is the 12 minute run, a fitness test described by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in the late 1960s. The idea is simple: cover as much distance as you can in 12 minutes, then compare the distance with published tables. The timer supplies the clock. It does not measure distance, so use a marked track, a measured path or a watch with GPS.

On a standard 400 meter track, the sums are easy. A steady pace turns directly into a distance:

Pace per kilometerDistance in 12 minutesLaps of 400 m
4:003.00 km7.5
5:002.40 km6
6:002.00 km5
7:001.71 km4.3
8:001.50 km3.75

The calculation is 720 seconds divided by the pace in seconds per kilometer. At 5:00 per kilometer, which is 300 seconds, 720 / 300 = 2.4 kilometers. That pace means each 400 meter lap takes 2:00. The running pace calculator works the same sum for any pace or unit, and the length converter turns kilometers into miles.

Most people hold an even pace, since starting too fast often means slowing at the end. A maximal effort is demanding, so if you have a health condition, have been inactive or are unsure whether it suits you, ask a qualified professional first. This is general information, not personal advice. A gentler option is to use the 12 minutes for an easy run or a brisk walk and note how far you get.

Study blocks, eggs and the limits of the page

A study block. Twelve minutes fits neatly into an hour, because five blocks make 60 minutes. That gives a rhythm many learners find workable: a short block on one topic, a two minute pause, then the next. Try ten minutes of reading and two of summarizing from memory, and notice which part sticks. If twelve minutes feels too short for the subject, the 15 minute timer gives a little more room, and the Pomodoro timer chains longer sessions with breaks.

A hard-boiled egg. Twelve minutes is the usual time given for a hard-boiled large egg that goes into boiling water, and the egg timer page lists it with the other doneness options. Egg size, starting temperature and altitude all change the result, so treat it as a guide. Cool the eggs in cold water to stop the cooking. If you are cooking for anyone vulnerable, follow local food safety guidance and serve eggs cooked firm.

Honest limits.

  • The alarm plays once and does not repeat. There is no second timer and no saved timer.
  • The page must stay open. A closed tab ends the countdown, and a locked phone may silence the alarm, so carry a phone alarm for anything that matters.
  • It counts from the moment you press Start, so it cannot be set to end at a clock time like 4:15.

To add several blocks to a total, use the time calculator. Five blocks of 12 minutes plus four breaks of 2 minutes come to 68 minutes, which is 1 hour 8 minutes.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

How many seconds are in 12 minutes?

Twelve minutes is 720 seconds, because 12 x 60 = 720. As decimal hours that is exactly 0.2. The display shows 12:00 and counts down to 0:00. Five of these blocks make a full hour, which is 3,600 seconds.

What is the 12 minute run test?

It is a fitness test in which you cover as much distance as you can in 12 minutes, then compare the result with published tables. It was described by Dr. Kenneth Cooper. This timer supplies the clock only, and you measure distance on a track or with a device.

How far do I go in 12 minutes at a steady pace?

Divide 720 by your pace in seconds per kilometer. At 6:00 per kilometer, which is 360 seconds, you cover 2.0 kilometers, and at 5:00 you cover 2.4. The running pace calculator does the same sum for miles or any other pace you try.

Is 12 minutes long enough to hard-boil an egg?

It is the common time for a large egg lowered into boiling water, giving a firm yolk. Small eggs, cold eggs and high altitude change the result. Cool the egg in cold water afterward, and follow local guidance when cooking for vulnerable people.

Can I use the timer on my phone for a long run?

You can, but keep the page open and the sound on. A phone that locks its screen may pause the page, and the alarm is brief. For a run, a sports watch or the timer built into your phone is a safer choice, with this page as a quick backup.
