6 Minute Timer

The clock opens at 06:00, so one press of Start runs six minutes and ends with a four-tone alarm. A bar and the browser tab title show the time left, and Full screen enlarges the digits. It is free and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the 6 minute timer

The page loads with 6 in the Minutes box, which makes 360 seconds. The Quick start menu does not include a 6 minute entry, so it shows Custom time, and the boxes below hold the real setting.

  1. Glance at Hours (0), Minutes (6) and Seconds (0). Change them for a slightly different length, such as 6 minutes 30 seconds for a firmer egg.
  2. Add a Label (optional), for example Eggs or Chapter 2. It is shown above the digits and again when the countdown reaches zero.
  3. Tick or untick Play a sound when time is up. Keep it on in the kitchen, where your hands may be busy and your eyes elsewhere.
  4. Press Start when the food goes in the pan or the reading begins. Press Pause if you are interrupted and Resume to carry on.
  5. Press Reset to go back to 06:00, or Full screen for a clock you can read from the stove.

Space starts and pauses, and R resets once the timer has stopped. When the alarm ends, pressing Space begins another six minutes.

Six minutes in the kitchen: eggs and pasta

Six minutes is the time many people associate with a soft-boiled egg, one with set whites and a still-liquid yolk. As a common approach, large eggs are lowered into boiling water and the clock starts at once. Moving them to cold water when the alarm goes stops the cooking. Egg size, whether the eggs came from the fridge, altitude, the pan and the number of eggs all change the result, so treat six minutes as a starting point and adjust by 30 seconds either way next time. The egg timer page has a menu of doneness levels, from runny to hard-boiled, if you want to compare them.

Food safety matters with eggs. Follow local guidance, and note that pregnant people, young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system are usually advised to eat eggs cooked firm, not runny. If that applies to you, choose a longer time.

Pasta is a different case. Packs state a cooking time, often between 8 and 12 minutes for dried pasta, and fresh pasta usually takes only a few minutes. A six minute countdown is useful as a check, set for the point when you want to start tasting. If a pack says 10 minutes, a 6 minute timer tells you roughly when you are four minutes from done, and you can then reset it for the remainder.

Here are other short cooking checks that fit a six minute clock:

  • Warming leftovers on the stove, stirring once halfway through at 03:00.
  • Toasting nuts or seeds in a dry pan, watched closely the whole time.
  • Resting a tea or a dough while you prepare the next step.

The timer reminds you to look, and the food itself tells you when it is ready.

Reading sprints, quiet pauses and fitting rounds together

Six minutes is a handy length for a reading sprint. At about 200 words per minute, a pace often used for reading time estimates, six minutes covers roughly 1,200 words, which is a few pages of a novel or a long article. Silent reading speed varies a lot with the text and the reader, so use that figure as a rough guide only. Try a sprint each day and note how far you get, then compare after a week.

A short guided or silent meditation is another use. Many people find that a few minutes is enough to sit quietly and breathe, and a visible timer removes the worry about how long has passed. This is general information and not medical advice, and a pause like this does not replace care from a professional if you are struggling.

Because the length divides neatly into an hour, you can chain rounds. Each press of Space starts a new six minutes, so the plan below uses the page as a simple pacing clock:

Rounds of 6 minutesTotal time
212 minutes
530 minutes
1060 minutes

Ten rounds make exactly an hour, and 6 minutes is 0.1 hour if you are filling in a timesheet. The time converter handles other lengths.

The timer rings once, does not repeat, and the page must stay open. A locked phone may pause it, so keep a phone alarm as a backup for anything important. For nearby lengths, use the 5 minute timer or the 7 minute timer, and the word counter will tell you how many words a passage holds.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most, answered in plain words.

Is 6 minutes right for a soft-boiled egg?

Six minutes is a common starting point for a large egg lowered into boiling water, giving set whites and a soft yolk. Size, starting temperature, altitude and the pan all change the result, so adjust by about 30 seconds. Follow local food safety guidance, especially for vulnerable people.

How many seconds are in 6 minutes?

There are 360 seconds in 6 minutes. The timer shows this as 06:00 and counts down to 00:00. Six minutes is also 0.1 of an hour, so ten rounds fill exactly one hour, which is handy when you want to split a longer block.

How many words can I read in 6 minutes?

At roughly 200 words per minute you can read about 1,200 words in 6 minutes. Real speed depends on the text, your familiarity with the topic and how carefully you read, so time one sprint of your own and use that figure instead of the average.

What is the difference between this and the egg timer?

This page is a plain six minute countdown with an optional label. The egg timer page has a menu of doneness levels, from runny yolk to extra firm, and opens with the label Eggs. Both use the same clock, alarm, progress bar and keyboard shortcuts.

Will I hear the alarm with the stove fan on?

Possibly not. The alarm is four short tones lasting a little over a second, and a loud fan or a muted device can drown it out. Turn the volume up, keep the tab open, and watch the large Full screen digits as a second cue.
